Theme: Whether truly a personal letter to a specific person or symbolically to Christ’s Church, in this epistle, John emphasizes a theme that is truly a defining feature for Christianity: That we love one another. This is how we are faithful; this is how we are fruitful. The New Testament is riddled with family language (God is Father, fellow Christians are brothers and sisters, etc.). This is to highlight the love of a family that the church is meant to have. Without love as a defining feature, and without obedience to God’s commandments, the church is not the church. In a world so divided, opinions so heated, how is the church able to shine the light of love when things are so dark?
